Upshot

  • Super VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) has arrived in the world and has become the new normal.
  • The kaleidoscope of factors that are affecting every person and company is leading to epidemic levels of stress and resulting health issues.
  • To overcome Super VUCA we need a Super Response. We must become something new.
  • While risks are dramatically increasing, so are opportunities, as evidenced by some companies, teams, and individuals who are transcending Super VUCA in a big way.

Here at the onset of Mental Health Awareness Month, the times we live in are strange and tumultuous. It seems that every day there is a new crisis to face, a new difficulty to overcome. In the span of just a few months, the world has been confronted with Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, creeping new pandemic risks, wicked droughts, and an economic downturn that has left many people in a state of financial insecurity. These are just four examples of how the VUCA we negotiate daily (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) has dramatically increased.

And it is not just our external lives that have been affected by this new level of VUCA—it is also affecting our personal lives. Our mental health and well-being have been put on the line as never before. This has created a condition we refer to as “Super VUCA Mind”

Super VUCA Mind

It is becoming increasingly obvious we cannot rely on any of our previous experiences to overcome Super VUCA. We also cannot afford to think wistfully of Super VUCA as a freak of nature, an aberration that will eventually pass. This volume of change is not only here to stay, it is accelerating. The fundamental disruption in the daily blur of technological, political, climate, economic, and social life we experience is in a word, unprecedented. We simply have not been here before. This was the lesson of the Perfect Storm in the famous Andrea Gale lost at sea in the Sebastian Junger book of that title. Sadly, its valiant fishermen failed to consider the unprecedented and freakish potential of the actual monster storm they were facing.

The hard reality is that today’s Super VUCA is here to stay. We can safely predict more surprises ahead. And more disruption guarantees new challenges that will no doubt lead to continued workplace and societal stress – and related illness. To combat the stress epidemic, employers and employees alike will have to find new answers, and soon. They will need to find the paradoxical calm in the eye of the Super VUCA hurricane. They will need to become something new.
