I know. I know…you’re thinking “how the heck can a life science be a management-leadership science?”
The past century has seen great advances in the science of organizations and management, but a lot of what we know about people and organizations still comes from Descartes. Many of today’s established practices – including scientific management – evolved from his philosophies. It’s time to throw the Machine View overboard. Today, as a result of new discoveries in neuroscience and other fields, our understanding of how people perform at their best is advancing rapidly. More broadly, a new performance science is emerging; one that actually makes more sense, based on the last century of scientific discoveries, including but not limited to quantum mechanics, biology, evolution, psychology, complexity, and machine science, for example.
There is no question that today’s world is changing fast. Tools like the internet, social networks, mobile devices, and a blizzard of cloud applications are changing the way we manage organizations and our lives. This shift has turned the traditional management theories upside down. We’re moving from a more centralized format to a distributed, flexible, sense-and-respond approach in which everyone can make decisions based on real-time information and knowledge.
We’re living in a new world where science has come of age. Philosophy and science have arrived at a singularity point, allowing us to make sense of our place in the universe. The clear answer is that today’s science must be based on the worldview of living, complex adaptive systems thinking – a much simpler, better way to think about not only enterprises, teams, and people – but selling, agility, and change itself.
The Digital-Knowledge Age is ushering in a new world of thinking about performance and optimization. A world where, instead of viewing human beings as materials to be processed, we see them as the creative engines that drive everything from innovation and productivity to human happiness.
The Science of Superperformance is a new way of thinking about work and about ourselves. This new thinking can lead to disruptive innovation, improved collaboration and productivity, higher engagement, greater interdependence, and transformed employer-employee wellbeing.
The “science of superperformance” is a management-leadership science. It’s true and it’s telling us that it’s a life science.
So, when you look at the future, look at how you want your life. This science is about how to get there. It’s about how to bring together these two sides of our human nature – the rational and the emotional. It’s about achieving all that we want in our personal and professional lives transformed results in business leadership, productivity, human happiness, and wellbeing.
